VSA's Meeting with the VNUA's Fisheries facculty

(VSA) A working group from Viet Nam Seaculture Association (VSA) met with faculty of fisheries, Viet Nam National University of Agriculture (VNUA) on December 4, 2018, seeking for plans to strengthen the cooperative relationship in education and scientific research for the development of Vietnam's marine farming industry.

VNUA’s Faculty of Fisheries was re­established in March 2015 after spinning out from Faculty of Animal Husbandry and Aquaculture. Its predecessor was founded in 1959 but soon separated to become the University of Fisheries in 1966. Currently, the faculty has a total of 24 staffs, including 2 associate professors, 4 doctors, 13 masters and 4 college graduates - among those, 18 are teaching staffs and 3 are technicians. All of its members, since the early days, have always been engaging with the mission to pursue a high- quality education and intensive researches to boost the development of Vietnam’s fishery, especially in the Northern region.

On behalf of VNUA’s Faculty of Fisheries, Assoc. Prof. and vice dean Dr Tran Thi Nang Thu briefly introduced about the faculty background, covering its history, organizational structure, academic activities, R&D achievements, etc. and some future directions to catch up with the very rapid transformations, both in Vietnam and abroad.

Assoc. Prof. Dr Nguyen Huu Dzung, VSA’s President presented a report on the reality of Vietnam’s marine farming industry and propose a strategic development plan towards 2030. In his notes, Dr Dzung clarified numerous major opportunities and challenges facing the industry, then claimed that education should be the key solution, particularly to satisfy the thirst for qualified human resources. Besides, Mr. Nguyen Cong Dzi, Le Minh Hai and Nguyen Ba Thong from VSA also shared their views on the prospect of Vietnam’s fishery and the imperative demand to improve our training system.

On a strong agreement that Vietnam should place additional investments and take full advantage of the marine farming industry to build up a sustainable aquaculture, both parties, VSA and VNUA’s Faculty of Fisheries came to sign a memorandum for long­term cooperation, underlying: to further doing research on the status quo of Vietnam’s aquaculture; step by step develop training programs for industrial marine farming; appeal farmers to participate in industrial aquaculture training courses; investigate and develop a specific plan to take advantage of marine spaces; encourage the participation in developing and innovating advanced marine farming equipment, technologies and solutions; establish the value chain of industrial aquaculture; and to conduct research and promote expanding the market for marine products, both exports and imports.

For 2019 - 2020, VSA and VNUA’s Faculty of Fisheries put forward a joint-action plan with 4 priorities:

  • VSA will recruit students from VNUA’s Faculty of Fisheries to do probation and sign long-term labor contract with qualified candidates after their graduation.
  • VNUA’s Faculty of Fisheries will cooperate with VSA and VSA’s Technology Center in aquaculture research projects with funding raised by VSA.
  • VNUA’s Faculty of Fisheries will be consultant to build the Quang Ninh based Institute of Mariculture Bio-Technology in collaboration with Phuc Quang Foods Co. Ltd...
  • Both parties will cooperate to complete principal documents specializing in industrial marine farming, such as guide books on modern aquaculture technology for enterprises, students and VSA’s members; to develop training programs for industrial marine farming; to take part in projects compiling English - Vietnamese Mariculture Dictionary and Mariculture Encyclopedia; to work together to coordinate the competitions on excellent technologies, solutions, equipment on industrial aquaculture.
